What is Live Scan?
Live Scan is an inkless fingerprinting process that electronically transmits fingerprint records to the California Department of Justice in a matter of seconds. Live Scan technology replaces the process of recording fingerprints using messy ink, and shortens the process of background clearances to a matter of days instead of weeks or months. Prints submitted through the Live Scan process allows the DOJ to coordinate any additional processing that is necessary such as forwarding the prints to the FBI.

What do I need to bring?
To be Live Scan fingerprinted you will need to provide a completed Request for Live Scan form for your specific need and a current valid photo ID. Examples of acceptable identification are:

  • California Driver's License
  • California DMV identification Card
  • Valid out-of-state Driver's License
  • Military ID
  • Passport
  • Resident Alien Card
  • Immigration Card
  • Green Card

How long will it take for my results?
You, your employer, or organization should receive your Live Scan Results within 7 to 10 days. Capital Live Scan is not responsible for the result of your Live Scan submission. Please allow a minimum of seven days before making a status inquiry. Applicants should check first with the agency that requested the background review since the Department of Justice sends results directly to the applicant agency. Requests that require manual processing of criminal history information, such as those involving pre-1945 cases, also may delay the reporting of results.

How do I check my results?
A 24-hour Automated Telephone Service is available from the Department of Justice at 916-227-4557. If a requesting agency does not have results yet and digital Live Scan fingerprints were submitted, you can use the automated telephone system to check on your submission. You will need the following information:

  1. Your date of birth
  2. The 10-digit Automated Transaction Identifier (ATI) number that appears at the bottom of the Department of Justice form requesting Live Scan fingerprint background checks.
  3. The ATI number always appears in the following sequence:
    • 1 Letters
    • 3 Numbers
    • 3 Letters
    • 3 Numbers

What can I do if there is no response sent to myself, my employer or the requesting agency?
The California Department Of Justice asks that the Person or Agency that requested the background check file an Applicant Fingerprint Transaction Follow-up Request form to them via fax at (916) 227-2000, so that they may track a missing Applicant record. Please be advised that this form is not to be used for updating an Agency's current criminal history information or any other record keeping purpose.

What if there is no record of my Live Scan?
If you have called the automated number and it has "no record" of your live scan. You can fill out the Department of Justice Applicant Fingerprint Transaction Follow-up Request form
